| Macaws as pets Macaws make wonderful pets as long as you can give them lots of love and attention. We raise and handfeed every baby macaw ensuring that it will be a loving companion for many years. Yes they make really good talkers if you take the time to work with them. Macaws are capable of mimicking quite well and most of the different species will talk equally well. Macaws are very playful and seem to love lots of destructible toys. They will learn to accept multiple members of a family if each person is willing to spend some time with the bird while it's young. Baby macaws are so sweet. |
| Macaws Species The large macaws that are most commonly available as pets are: Blue and Gold Macaws, Greenwing Macaws, Scarlet Macaws, Military Macaws, Red Fronted Macaws, blue throated macaws, and the Hyacinth Macaws. Species vary in price depending on availability and rarity. I must say though that all are great parrots. Baby macaws of all species make wonderful companions. |
| Macaws Diet The macaws diet is made up of fruits, vegetables, nuts, a good seed mix and mineral / vitamin supplements. Some people are now feeding special pellet diets which eliminate the need for vitamin supplements but should not replace large nuts, fruits and vegetables that these parrots also need. Macaws need the extra fat contained in large non salted nuts. In the rain forests these parrots get a variety of fruits, palm nuts, seeds of fruits, and vegitation they ingest while playing and forageing in the trees and forest canopy. There are also beautiful photos and documentation of macaws visiting clay licks in the jungles of south america where these and other parrots congregate to eat the mineral rich clay from the hill sides. A baby macaw will eat the same diet as the adults once it weans. |

Macaws can live 50 years or more but rarely do in captivity. . They need a higher fat diet than most parrots. . They learn to talk very well. . They can make a lot of noise when they want too. Usually at sun- up and sun-down. . They make excellent pets for the right people. |
